Membrane degassing systems represent a vital and growing application of membrane contactor technology, designed to remove dissolved gases—particularly oxygen and carbon dioxide—from water and other liquids. These systems are essential in industries ranging from power generation and semiconductor manufacturing to food and beverage production, where dissolved gases can cause corrosion, oxidation, and product quality issues.

Membrane degassing operates by passing the liquid on one side of a hydrophobic microporous membrane and applying a vacuum or sweep gas on the other side. The dissolved gases diffuse through the membrane pores and are removed from the liquid stream. This membrane-based approach offers several advantages over conventional degassing technologies such as vacuum towers and chemical scavengers, including lower energy consumption, smaller footprints, and the ability to achieve extremely low residual gas levels. In most industrial applications, oxygen should be removed to the content of less than 500 ppb, and membrane contactors can achieve less than 1 to 10 ppb of oxygen with a vacuum of 15 to 20 torr .

The growth of the membrane degassing segment is being driven by increasingly stringent water quality standards and the need to protect expensive industrial equipment from corrosion and scaling. In power generation, membrane degassing is used to remove dissolved oxygen from boiler feedwater, preventing corrosion of boiler tubes and extending equipment life. In semiconductor manufacturing, membrane degassing is used to produce ultrapure water for wafer cleaning and other critical processes. In the food and beverage industry, membrane degassing extends the shelf life of beer, wine, juice, and other beverages by removing dissolved oxygen .

Advances in hollow fiber membrane technology are improving degassing efficiency and reducing system size.
