Membrane degassing systems represent a vital and growing application of membrane contactor technology, designed to remove dissolved gases—particularly oxygen and carbon dioxide—from water and other liquids. Membrane degassing operates by passing the liquid on one side of a hydrophobic microporous membrane and applying a vacuum or sweep gas on the other side. This membrane-based approach offers several advantages over conventional degassing technologies such as vacuum towers and chemical scavengers, including lower energy consumption, smaller footprints, and the ability to achieve extremely low residual gas levels. In most industrial applications, oxygen should be removed to the content of less than 500 ppb, and membrane contactors can achieve less than 1 to 10 ppb of oxygen with a vacuum of 15 to 20 torr .

In power generation, membrane degassing is used to remove dissolved oxygen from boiler feedwater, preventing corrosion of boiler tubes and extending equipment life. In the food and beverage industry, membrane degassing extends the shelf life of beer, wine, juice, and other beverages by removing dissolved oxygen .
