Hidden Gems in Udaipur That Tourists Should Explore
When people hear about Udaipur, the first things that come to mind are beautiful lakes, royal palaces, and stunning sunsets. But did you know that this "City of Lakes" in Rajasthan isn't limited to just its famous tourist attractions? Around Udaipur and in some corners of the city, there are also several hidden gems tucked away, where you can experience peace away from the crowds, along with nature, history, and local culture. If on your next Udaipur trip you want to discover some less-explored places instead of just the popular tourist spots, these hidden gems can make your travel experience even more memorable. So let's explore some of Udaipur's beautiful places that are just a short distance from Ananta — places every traveller should definitely add to their bucket list.
1. Badi Lake – A Peaceful Nature Escape
Badi Lake is also called Tiger Lake and dates back to the 17th century. Badi Lake is one of the most tranquil areas of Udaipur as it is secluded from the regular tourists who tend to crowd the popular spots. Being surrounded by the Aravalli Hills and having many little temples and ghats, Badi Lake provides the perfect setting for walking around in the morning, observing birds, and enjoying the lake's scenery.
2. Sajjangarh Biological Park – Wildlife and Greenery
Sajjangarh Biological Park is located at the foot of the Aravalli Hills close to the Monsoon Palace. This place consists of a vast, wooded expanse of greenery that plays host to an assortment of animals, ranging from deer and birds to the rarely seen leopard in the deeper parts of the park. The walking trails run through deciduous forest, thereby making it one of the best ways to enjoy the outdoors in Udaipur.
3. Shilpgram – Local Art and Culture
Shilpgram is a village that celebrates the art and craft traditions of the area. The traditional houses in the area depict the architecture of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Goa, along with artisans showcasing their skills in areas such as pottery and weaving. It is an excellent place to spend a half day for someone who is interested in learning more about the art and culture of the area, rather than spending time in the palaces.
4. Kodiyat and the Aravalli Surroundings – A Nature Experience
The Kodiyat region, located in the Girwa Tehsil of Udaipur, lies peacefully amidst the Aravalli ranges, removed from the popular tourist circuit of the city. This is the rural side of Udaipur with its villages, fields, and hills offering an entirely different tempo to the one found on the shores of the lakes. The entire area has been designed by nature itself and any stroll in its surrounding streets will definitely provide travelers with the real taste of rural Rajasthan.
5- Sajjangarh Surroundings – Scenic Hill Views
The biological park aside, the surrounding hills of Sajjangarh (Bansdara Hill) also provide some of the most scenic sights in the area. The Monsoon Palace which sits on top of the hill is famous, however, the hills themselves and the combination of scrub forests, winding roads, and open views over the lakes and roofs of Udaipur city are not to be overlooked, especially during the late afternoon sunsets when everything in the city takes on an orange glow.
Final Thoughts
Udaipur's palaces and lakes will always be the headline act, but its quieter corners — a peaceful lake, a forested park, an artisan village, and the hills that frame the city — are where its real character comes through. Based at Ananta, nestled in the Aravalli Hills, it's easy to build a day or two around this offbeat side of the city before heading back to the resort's pool, spa, and mountain views to unwind.
