An even more advanced opportunity is in offering "Cooling-as-a-Service," where a provider owns and operates the cooling infrastructure and sells cooling capacity to the data center operator on a consumption basis, much like a utility. The global imperative for sustainability is creating a massive market opportunity for "green" cooling solutions. Data centers are under intense public and regulatory pressure to reduce their environmental impact, particularly their energy and water consumption. This provides a powerful incentive for manufacturers to develop and market solutions with superior energy efficiency. There is a huge opportunity for systems that can intelligently leverage "free cooling," a technique where cool outside air or water is used to cool the data center without running energy-intensive chillers. As computation moves closer to the user to support 5G and IoT applications, there will be a need for tens of thousands of small, distributed data centers. Cooling these edge sites presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. The solutions must be compact, highly reliable, and capable of being managed remotely without on-site staff. This creates an opportunity for manufacturers to develop standardized, "all-in-one" modular or containerized micro-data center solutions that include integrated power, cooling, and security. There is also an opportunity to develop ruggedized cooling units that can operate in non-traditional and harsh environments, such as at the base of a cell tower or on a factory floor. While the value of each individual unit is small, the sheer volume required to build out the edge infrastructure represents a major long-term growth opportunity for the industry.
