Why, when you can simply buy a complete assembled upper (and with no FFL transfer at that) would you ever buy an AR15 upper build kit, especially since assembling the rifle from one will take so much more time and effort?

There are some good reasons. Let’s break this all down.

What Comes with an AR15 Upper Build Kit? (But Check the Specifications)

First, let’s take a closer look at what actually comes with an AR15 upper build kit. One of these should come with:

• The upper receiver itself, either forged or billet
• A barrel and muzzle device (usually a flash hider)
• A handguard (typically a Pic rail or a KeyMod or M-LOK rail system)
• A gas system (a gas block and tube)
• A bolt carrier group
• A forward assist
• A charging handle
• An ejection port cover (AKA a dust cover)

Now, with all of this being said, the latter 4 components don’t always come with AR15 upper build kits, so make sure you check the specifications to see what parts do (and don’t) come with it.

However, if they do come with all of the parts mentioned, with the appropriate hardware you should be able to assemble the upper and mate it to a complete lower to create a fully functioning rifle.

But, again, the million dollar question: why, when you can just buy an assembled upper?

Why an Upper Build Kit Is Better

Here are a few of the reasons that an AR15 upper build might be a better option for you than an assembled upper:

• An AR15 upper build kit grants you flexibility. Since you will have to assemble the upper yourself, you’ll have greater flexibility with what parts you want to include, and which parts you don’t. It might cost you more to get extra parts, but you’ll still have greater flexibility.
• Working with a build kit is a lot more educational. Pairing an assembled upper with a lower won’t really teach you about how the parts of an upper function. If you build from the piecemeal parts, you will have a much better idea of how the whole thing works together.
• On that note, if you have that experience, whenever you want to make repairs or upgrades, you will be able to identify the part and you’ll also know how to replace it.
• If you enjoy working with your hands or take pride of ownership in your work, you will enjoy the process of completing an upper from a build kit.
• If you can’t find the assembled upper you want, but can find a kit, you have a potential workaround there.
• A kit can potentially save you money over an assembled upper.
