A year ago, Duke Tobin and the Bengals had no interest in helping other teams by trading Tee Higgins. Now, they might at least pick up the phone.Tobin, the Bengals director of player personnel and de facto general manager, was asked at the NFL combine for the second straight year about the po sibility of trading Higgins. There were similar trade rumors floating around then about whether Cincinnati might deal Higgins with a Joe Burrow extension likely looming and a Ja'Marr Chase contract likely not far beyond that."I'm not in the busine s of making other teams better. I'm in the busine s of making the Cincinnati Bengals better, and so trading Tee Higgins is not on my mind. That's their problem. They want a receiver, go find your own," Tobin said at the 2023 NFL Combine. "In my opinion, Tee Higgins is a good piece for the Cincinnati Bengals. So, the trade stuff is a little ridiculous right now."That was then, and this is now. Then, Cincinnati still had him under contract with the po sibility of placing the franchise tag on him. Now, Higgins would have to agree to sign the tag or agree to an extension before July 15. He could threaten to hold out in 2024, and until he signs the tag, he, in e sence, has a no-trade clause, as he could simply refuse to sign if he is traded to certain teams.Higgins will be free to negotiate contracts with other teams and could agree to a term sheet, though the Bengals could simply match the terms and he would be obligated to return to Cincinnati on that deal.
