7

Valued at USD 14.6 Billion in 2025, the methanol ships market is projected to reach USD 16.4 Billion in 2026 and USD 43.2 Billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 12.9% during the forecast period 2026–2034. Europe was the largest regional market in 2025. Key players include A.P. Moller - Maersk A/S, China COSCO Shipping, CMA CGM Group, Damen Shipyards Group, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (Holdings) Ltd., MAN Energy Solutions SE, Wärtsilä Corporation, MOL, NYK Line, HMM Co., Ltd., OCI N.V., and Waterfront Shipping Ltd. Growth is supported by emissions-reduction goals across the maritime industry and wider use of alternative marine fuels.

Container Ships Lead Methanol Ships Market Adoption

Container ships dominated the market with a 51.2% share in 2025, reflecting strong deployment of methanol-powered vessels by major shipping operators seeking to lower emissions and meet environmental rules. Methanol is widely seen as a fuel that supports long-haul cargo movement while keeping carbon emissions low, and rising global trade volumes and fleet expansion programs sustain demand.

Recent orders and deliveries confirm the trend. In December 2025, Hapag-Lloyd ordered eight methanol-powered container ships for delivery from 2028 to 2029, fitted with highly efficient engines that improve fuel efficiency by up to 30 percent. In January 2026, Cargill delivered its first green methanol dual-fuel vessel, the Brave Pioneer, to test performance, bunkering capacity and carbon calculations. Methanol-fueled container ships are used on long-haul international routes.

Dual-Fuel Methanol and Pure Methanol Propulsion Pathways

Dual-fuel methanol vessels held the largest fuel-type share at 81.5%, owing to operational flexibility and the ability to switch between conventional fuels and methanol. Shipping companies prefer them because they reduce fuel availability risk while ensuring compliance with emission norms.

Pure methanol is projected to grow at a fast 13.4% CAGR as green methanol becomes more available and attention turns to zero-emission shipping. Shipowners are exploring fully methanol-powered vessels to reduce dependency on fossil fuels. Polaris analysis projects the methanol share of the global fleet rising from 3% in 2025 to 18% in 2035, with the share of new orders climbing from 12% to 50%. The report also considers methanol more cost-effective than LNG-fueled vessels, since its price is lower, storage is less complicated and compliance with emissions rules is more manageable.

Green Methanol Supply and Methanol Bunkering Readiness

Fuel availability is improving. According to the Methanol Institute, as of March 2026 there were 263 renewable methanol projects worldwide, with projected capacity of 48.5 million tons through 2031. In North America, expansion of green methanol production capacity across the US and Canada, supported by investments from companies such as OCI N.V., is lifting regional growth to a CAGR of 13.6%.

Methanol bunkering infrastructure is developing in tiers. Rotterdam, Singapore, Shanghai and Antwerp are fully operational; Houston, Fujairah, Hamburg and Busan are expanding; and Mumbai, Santos and Cape Town are emerging. The UAE is a key bunkering point for alternative marine fuels, while Brazil is emerging as a producer of green methanol. Early adoption of methanol bunkering facilities is laying the groundwork for ports to become global fuel centers with sustainable income streams.

Regulation and Economics

Europe led with a 38.99% share in 2025 on the strength of maritime decarbonization policies and clean energy investment. The International Maritime Organization plans a minimum 40% reduction in Methanol Ships carbon intensity of international shipping by 2030 and 70% by 2050. Polaris benchmarks show methanol at USD 350–600 per ton, against USD 400–700 for LNG and USD 600–900 for marine diesel.

Costs remain a restraint: vessel conversion and infrastructure investment slow adoption among smaller fleet owners, and Polaris estimates a CAPEX premium of 15–20% over conventional vessels for large ships. Shipowners have begun evaluating methanol as an intermediary fuel, balancing cost and sustainability.
