Planning Christmas Stock for Your Dairy or Convenience Store

The weeks leading up to Christmas are among the busiest of the year for many dairies and convenience stores in New Zealand. Shoppers are buying last-minute gifts, stocking up for gatherings and treating themselves as the summer holidays begin. With the right planning, this period can deliver a significant lift in sales. Without it, you risk running out of popular items or being left with unsold seasonal stock in January.

Start planning early. Ideally, look at your seasonal range from late October, so you can order before the busiest period and before popular lines sell out at the supplier. Review what sold well last year, if you have that information, and note any products that were left over. This simple step prevents repeating the same mistakes.

Seasonal confectionery is the centrepiece of most Christmas ranges. Boxed chocolates, chocolate Santas, advent calendars, candy canes and gift packs all sell well, particularly as quick presents for teachers, colleagues and neighbours. Give these products a dedicated display near the entrance or counter, so customers see them as soon as they walk in. A small, well-presented area often outsells a larger, cluttered one.

Be careful with quantities. Seasonal stock has a short selling window, and anything left after Christmas usually has to be discounted heavily. It is wiser to order a moderate amount at first and top up as you see what sells. Working with a supplier that has no minimum order makes this much easier, as you can add a few more units of a fast-selling item without committing to a huge volume upfront.

Don't forget the everyday categories. Summer weather and holiday gatherings increase demand for soft drinks, energy drinks, chips and snacks. Customers heading to the beach or to a barbecue often pick up drinks and nibbles on the way. Make sure your chiller is full and your snack shelves are well stocked, especially on weekends and in the days just before Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.
Think about gifting beyond chocolate. Small items like novelty lollies, imported treats and simple stocking fillers can sell well when displayed together as gift ideas. Grouping products with a simple sign, such as "Stocking fillers under $10", helps busy shoppers decide quickly and lifts your average sale.

Plan for trading hours and staffing as well. If you open longer hours over the holidays, you will need more stock to cover the extra trade. Check your supplier's last dispatch date before Christmas and first dispatch date after New Year, and place a larger order ahead of any closures so you are not caught short when deliveries pause.

After Christmas, review your results honestly. Note what sold out quickly, what lingered, and what customers asked for that you didn't have. Keep these notes somewhere safe so next year's planning starts from real experience rather than memory.

Retailers looking for seasonal and everyday stock can find a wide range of Christmas confectionery and gift lines through Stock4Shops, an online wholesale supplier for New Zealand shops. Alongside seasonal chocolate and lollies, it carries the drinks, snacks and grocery staples that keep sales moving during summer, with free delivery on orders over $450 + GST. With a clear plan and a reliable supplier, Christmas can be one of the most rewarding times of the year for your store.
