A Day on the Backstretch: How an American Yard Compares to Lambourn

Lambourn on a winter’s morning is something special. Strings of horses clip-clopping through the village in the half-light, steam rising off their backs, riders wrapped up against the wind as they head for the gallops on the downs. It’s the Valley of the Racehorse at its finest. But what does the same morning look like for a stable in America? Grab a cuppa and let’s spend a day on the backstretch.

Barns at the Racetrack

The first big difference is where the horses live. In Britain, most racehorses are trained in private yards, either in training centres like Lambourn and Newmarket or on individual farms dotted around the countryside. They travel to the racecourse on raceday and come home again afterwards.

In America, it’s very often the other way round. Many trainers keep their horses in barns right at the racetrack, in a stabling area known as the backstretch. A trainer might have a set number of stalls allocated at a track, with their horses, staff and tack room all under one roof. Some also use dedicated training centres or farms, but the racetrack barn is the heart of the American system. If you’d like to see how individual barns go about their work, our listings of American racehorse trainers are a brilliant way to discover yards across the country.

That means a horse can walk out of its stall, train on the main track in the morning and race on the very same surface that afternoon. Handy, eh?

The Morning Routine

The day starts early on both sides of the Atlantic – no surprises there. On the backstretch, the lights go on well before dawn as grooms start feeding, mucking out and checking legs.

When the track opens for training, horses head out in a steady stream. Rather than riding out in long strings to a set of gallops like you’d see on Warren Hill, American horses usually go to the track individually or in small sets. Exercise riders take them for a jog, a gallop or a timed “breeze”, while the trainer watches from the rail or the grandstand with a stopwatch.

The track is closed at intervals for renovation breaks, when tractors and harrows come out to level the surface. Then training resumes until the track shuts for the morning, usually leaving plenty of time to get everything sorted before racing.

Enter the Hotwalker

Once a horse comes back from the track, it’s hosed or bathed and then handed to a hotwalker. In Britain, many yards use mechanical horse walkers, but in America it’s common for horses to be walked by hand around the shedrow – the covered walkway that runs around the barn – until they’ve cooled off.

It’s an unglamorous job but a vital one, and it’s often where young people first get a foot in the door. Plenty of top trainers started out walking hots.

The Day at a Glance

Here’s roughly how a typical American barn morning shapes up:

• Pre-dawn – feeding, mucking out and checking legs.

• Early morning – first sets go to the track for exercise and breezes.

• Mid-morning – renovation break, then the later sets train.

• Late morning – horses cooled down, bathed, bandaged and fed.

• Afternoon – racing for those with runners, rest and evening stables for the rest.

Surfaces and Facilities

Another contrast is the training surface. Lambourn trainers have a choice of turf gallops and all-weather strips across the downs. In the US, horses mainly train on dirt, with turf and synthetic options at some tracks. There’s growing interest in synthetic surfaces – NYRA, for example, has unveiled a Tapeta inner track for training at Belmont Park. ## Different Systems, Same Passion

Strip away the differences and the heart of it is the same. Whether it’s a groom in Lambourn or a hotwalker at Santa Anita, the people looking after racehorses share the same early starts, the same muddy boots and the same quiet pride when one of their horses runs a cracker. They’ll all be knackered by lunchtime, too.

The best way to really understand it is to talk to the people doing the job – or even to have a go yourself. To keep up with the latest openings, interviews and stories from across the Atlantic, head to our US racing jobs and news and see where a morning on the backstretch might lead you.
