Solid-state transformers: What companies need to solve before scaling beyond demonstration projects
Solid-state transformer market: grid modernization is moving SSTs toward commercial deployment
The global solid-state transformer market was valued at USD 259.31 million in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 1.14 billion by 2035, growing at a 15.9% CAGR. Asia-Pacific accounted for about 40.1% of the market in 2025, while smart grid and distribution networks represented the largest application at 39.7%.
Commercial activity is increasing
SST adoption is moving beyond laboratory prototypes into utility, EV charging, energy-storage and data-center applications. Eaton acquired Resilient Power Systems for $86 million, including $55 million in cash and contingent consideration, specifically strengthening its solid-state transformer technology portfolio for applications such as data centers, energy storage and EV charging.
The U.S. Department of Energy has also been funding commercialization. Its Flexible Innovative Transformer Technologies program selected nine projects receiving about $20 million, including a $2.88 million Solid State PowerHub project and GE Vernova's $1.99 million, 1-MVA three-winding AC SST demonstration at a utility-owned substation.
In 2026, DOE continued advancing SST demonstrations, including a water-pumping application and the next-generation Solid State PowerHub, which combines transformer, voltage-regulation and power-factor-correction functions in a single power-electronic platform.

Grid investment is creating a larger addressable market
The U.S. transformer market is also being shaped by supply-chain constraints: DOE reports that distribution-transformer lead times increased from 3–6 months in 2019 to 12–30 months in 2023. The agency has identified more than 80,000 different distribution-transformer varieties in the U.S., highlighting the need for more standardized and scalable grid equipment.
India is expanding its grid at a similar time. The country's transmission plan targets 388 GW of peak demand by 2032, with transformation capacity rising from 1,478 GVA in June 2026 to 2,345 GVA by 2032. The transmission network is planned to expand from 5.09 lakh circuit km to 6.48 lakh circuit km.
India has also approved ₹54,082 crore in central financial support for Green Energy Corridor Phase III, supporting 135 GW of renewable-energy evacuation capacity and 50 GWh of battery storage. This creates additional demand for advanced grid-interconnection and power-management technologies.
Where SST economics are becoming attractive
The strongest near-term opportunities are emerging where conventional transformers require additional power-conversion equipment—particularly EV fast-charging hubs, renewable-energy and storage systems, microgrids, data centers and grid-edge infrastructure. SSTs can combine voltage conversion with bidirectional power flow, voltage regulation and AC/DC conversion, potentially reducing equipment footprint and conversion stages.
The commercial question is therefore shifting from whether SSTs work technically to whether their higher upfront cost can be justified through power density, controllability, reduced footprint and grid flexibility. With utilities investing heavily in modernization and companies acquiring SST technology, the market is gradually moving from demonstration projects toward application-specific commercialization.
