Is the Permanent Magnets Market Ready for a Post-China Supply Chain?

Permanent magnets are the quiet workhorses of the modern economy. Unlike electromagnets, they hold their magnetic field without any external power, which makes them indispensable wherever efficiency, compactness and reliability matter. They sit inside EV traction motors, direct-drive offshore wind turbines, industrial robots, MRI scanners, aerospace actuators and the earbuds in your pocket. As the world shifts toward electrification, renewable energy and automation, demand for stronger and smaller magnets keeps rising.

That growth comes with a catch. Magnet supply chains are among the most geopolitically exposed in advanced manufacturing, with refining and production heavily concentrated in a single country. Governments and manufacturers are now racing to build alternative sources, from domestic mining to recycling to rare-earth-lean designs, and the outcome will shape who wins in this market.

This post, based on Grand View Research's analysis, covers where magnets are made, who makes them, and where the market is heading.

  1. Regional Landscape & Supply Chain

Asia Pacific dominates. The region held a 75.6% revenue share in 2025, with China the largest country market. It is also expected to grow at the fastest CAGR through 2033. Demand comes from EV production, wind installations and consumer electronics. China sold over 13 million EVs in 2025 alone, out of 20.7 million globally.

The concentration risk is real. China controls roughly 70% of global refining capacity. Export controls on heavy rare earths such as dysprosium and holmium in 2025 pushed up price volatility and forced several Western OEMs to cut production or rethink sourcing.

Other regions are responding with "mine-to-magnet" strategies:

  • North America: The U.S. is the largest regional market, and domestic mining and processing is being rebuilt, including Mountain Pass in California. Incentives for EV manufacturing support this.
  • Europe: Heavily import-dependent for rare earths, Europe is backing industrial projects, recycling and source diversification, with EV production as the main magnet consumer.
  • Latin America: Brazil holds the world's second-largest rare earth reserves. The CIT SENAI ITR facility in Minas Gerais, operating since 2024-2025, is the Southern Hemisphere's first plant making sintered NdFeB magnets at pilot scale (about 100 tons a year).
  • India: In January 2026, India announced plans to start domestic rare earth magnet manufacturing by 2028, backed by a USD 860 million scheme targeting 6,000 metric tons a year. The aim is to cut an 80-90% dependence on China.

Material mix: NdFeB accounts for 71.2% of the market because of its unmatched power density in EV motors and direct-drive wind turbines. SmCo is the fastest-growing material, driven by aerospace and defense needs at temperatures between 350°C and 550°C.

  1. Key Industry Participants

The market combines global specialists, regional manufacturers and engineered-solution providers. Grand View Research profiles ten companies:

  • Adams Magnetic Products Co.
  • Earth-Panda Advance Magnetic Material Co., Ltd.
  • Arnold Magnetic Technologies
  • Daido Steel Co., Ltd.
  • Eclipse Magnetics Ltd.
  • Electron Energy Corp.
  • Goudsmit Magnetics Group
  • Hangzhou Permanent Magnet Group
  • Magnequench International, LLC
  • Ningbo Yunsheng Co., Ltd.

Two examples show the range. Eclipse Magnetics (UK) focuses on magnetic separation, lifting and holding, using NdFeB, SmCo, ferrite and alnico. Electron Energy Corp. (U.S.) serves aerospace, defense and medical customers with SmCo and neodymium magnets, along with machining, coating and custom assemblies.

The competitive edge is moving from volume to supply security. Companies with non-China sourcing, recycling capability or rare-earth-lean designs are gaining strategic value.

  1. Market Size Projections

The global permanent magnets market was valued at USD 25.9 billion in 2025 and is estimated at USD 28.0 billion in 2026. It is projected to reach USD 47.4 billion by 2033, growing at a 6.8% CAGR from 2026 to 2033.

What drives the growth:

  • Electrification: NdFeB is essential to EV traction motors.
  • Renewables: Renewable capacity is projected to grow by almost 4,600 GW between 2025 and 2030. Offshore wind is expected to double to 140 GW, and direct-drive turbines use hundreds of kilograms of NdFeB per megawatt.
  • Efficiency regulation: Permanent magnet synchronous motors are 15-30% more efficient than induction motors.
  • Automation and miniaturization: Robotics, haptics, wearables and MRI all need smaller, stronger magnets.

By application: Consumer goods and electronics led with a 26.1% share in 2025. Energy is the fastest-growing segment.

Opportunities: Rare-earth-free and "thrifting" designs, and recycling. Recycled magnets could supply up to 10% of global demand by the mid-2030s.

The Bottom Line

The permanent magnets market is on a solid growth path toward USD 47.4 billion by 2033, but the winners will be the players who secure raw material access and diversify supply.
