Open loop ground source heat pump systems represent a specialized but important segment of the GSHP market, offering high efficiency and low installation costs in locations where an adequate supply of clean groundwater is available . Unlike closed loop systems, which circulate a sealed water-antifreeze mixture through buried pipes, open loop systems extract groundwater from a well or surface water body and use it directly as the heat exchange medium before returning it to the ground or a surface water body.

The fundamental design of an open loop system involves two wells: a production well that draws groundwater from an aquifer and an injection well (or return point) that returns the water after it has passed through the heat pump. The groundwater is typically pumped at a rate of 1.5 to 3 gallons per minute per ton of heating or cooling capacity, depending on the temperature difference and the system's design. The water passes through a heat exchanger within the heat pump, where heat is extracted (in heating mode) or rejected (in cooling mode), and is then returned to the aquifer or discharged to a surface water body such as a pond or stream.

The primary advantage of open loop systems is their exceptional efficiency. Because groundwater maintains a relatively constant temperature year-round—typically between 10°C and 15°C in temperate climates—open loop systems can achieve higher COPs than closed loop systems in some conditions. The absence of buried loop pipes also reduces installation costs, as the system requires only the drilling of production and injection wells rather than the extensive trenching or deep boreholes required for closed loop systems. Open loop systems are also particularly well-suited for buildings with high heating and cooling loads, such as commercial and industrial facilities, where the required pumping rates can be met without excessive water consumption.

However, open loop systems have several important limitations that restrict their applicability. They require an adequate and reliable supply of clean groundwater, making them unsuitable for locations where aquifers are limited or water quality is poor. The water must meet certain quality standards to prevent corrosion and fouling of the heat pump's heat exchanger, and local regulations may restrict the volume of water that can be extracted and returned. In some jurisdictions, open loop systems are subject to permitting requirements that can be complex and time-consuming to navigate.

Open loop systems are most commonly installed in water-rich regions, including parts of North America (such as the northeastern United States and eastern Canada), Europe (particularly Scandinavia and northern Europe), and parts of Asia where abundant groundwater resources exist. They are also used in larger commercial and institutional applications where the high efficiency and low installation cost justify the regulatory and hydrological requirements. Examples include office buildings, schools, hospitals, and industrial facilities with significant heating and cooling demands.

The open loop segment represents a smaller share of the GSHP market compared to vertical and horizontal closed loop systems, but it remains an important technology for locations where groundwater resources are abundant. The segment is being shaped by the growing demand for high-efficiency heating and cooling solutions in water-rich regions, alongside increasing awareness of the economic benefits of open loop systems for large commercial and industrial applications.

Key considerations for open loop system design include careful assessment of groundwater quality and availability, appropriate sizing of the production and injection wells, and compliance with local regulations governing water use and discharge. When properly designed and installed, open loop systems offer an efficient and cost-effective renewable heating and cooling solution for buildings in suitable locations.
