An 18ct gold ring and an 18ct gold bracelet share the same stated purity, yet their values can be very different. Weight is an obvious reason, but it is not the only one. The current gold market, the item's construction, gemstones and the way a buyer assesses the piece can all affect the amount offered.

For someone checking the value of jewellery before selling, the useful question is not simply, "What is gold worth today?" It is how the market price of pure gold translates into the value of a particular 18ct item.

Understanding that calculation makes it much easier to assess an offer.

What Does 18ct Gold Actually Mean?

In Australia, jewellery purity is commonly expressed in carats, abbreviated as "ct". This use of carat should not be confused with the carat used to describe gemstone weight.

Pure gold is represented as 24ct. An 18ct gold item contains 18 parts gold out of 24, which is equivalent to 75% gold by mass. The remaining 25% consists of other metals used to create an alloy.

This is why 18ct pieces may also carry a "750" fineness mark. The number represents 750 parts of gold per 1,000 parts of the alloy.

Ask how the buyer arrived at the offer. A clear assessment should make it possible to understand whether the figure is based primarily on metal content or whether other characteristics of the item have been considered.
