My practice results gave me a clearer picture of what I actually understood about home inspection. At first, I expected the preparation to focus mainly on identifying visible defects. Instead, I found that a good foundation requires knowledge of many residential systems, inspection procedures, reporting, and professional responsibilities.

 

Getting Familiar with the Home Inspector Exam

One of the first things I learned was that home inspector licensing is not identical across the United States. Each state can establish its own education, examination, and licensing requirements. Some states use the National Home Inspector Examination, while others have their own examination process.

The NHIE is developed and administered by the Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors and is used by organizations such as ASHI for its certification requirements.

 

What My Practice Results Revealed

My first Home Inspector Practice Test result was useful because it showed the difference between recognizing a topic and actually applying it. I was comfortable with some familiar areas but needed more review when questions involved specific inspection situations.

I started recording the subjects behind my incorrect answers instead of focusing only on my percentage. This made my study sessions more targeted and helped me notice patterns in my mistakes.

 

Reviewing Major Home Inspection Areas

My preparation covered a wide range of residential components. These included structural elements, exteriors, roofing, electrical systems, plumbing, heating and cooling systems, insulation, and interior components.

ASHI's Standard of Practice, for example, addresses areas such as foundations and framing, exterior components, and systems that are readily accessible and visually observable during an inspection.

A Home Inspector Practice Questions session also helped me become more comfortable with scenario-based thinking. Rather than memorizing isolated facts, I tried to understand what an inspector should observe, document, and communicate.

 

Changing My Study Approach

After reviewing my results, I changed how I prepared. I spent less time repeatedly studying topics I already understood and more time working through weaker areas. I also practiced reading questions carefully because small differences in wording can change what a question is asking.

I found it helpful to combine textbook study with practical inspection knowledge. For example, understanding how a roof, drainage system, or foundation works made technical questions easier to interpret.
