Regional Race: How the Green Hydrogen Market Is Competing for Global Supremacy

The green hydrogen market is global, but regions have different strategies, resources, and policy drivers. Europe is a leader in policy and demand, North America in subsidies, Asia-Pacific in manufacturing, and the Middle East in low-cost solar.

Europe: Policy-Driven, Demand-Led

Europe has the most ambitious green hydrogen targets. The green hydrogen market is driven by the EU Green Deal and REPowerEU, which targets domestic green hydrogen production and imports. Europe has high renewable energy potential (North Sea wind, solar in Spain). It also has large industrial demand (steel, chemicals, refining). Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Spain are leaders. The EU is funding hydrogen hubs and import corridors. Europe is likely to be the largest green hydrogen market for the next decade.

North America: Subsidy-Driven, Production-Focused

The US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) provides a tax credit (up to $3/kg) for green hydrogen production. The electrolytic hydrogen market in North America is seeing massive investment (e.g., Texas, California, Gulf Coast). The US has excellent solar and wind resources. It also has existing hydrogen infrastructure (pipeline, storage) from the petrochemical industry. Canada also has a hydrogen strategy (focus on Alberta). The US is likely to become a low-cost green hydrogen producer. However, demand may lag behind Europe.

Asia-Pacific: Manufacturing and Exports

Japan and South Korea are hydrogen leaders (import-dependent). The green hydrogen market in Asia-Pacific also includes China (which is the world's largest hydrogen producer, mostly grey), Australia (sun, wind, and land), and India (solar). Australia is targeting green hydrogen exports to Japan and Korea. China is rapidly scaling electrolyzer manufacturing. India has the world's cheapest solar. The region will likely be the largest manufacturer of electrolyzers and a major producer of green hydrogen. The market is fragmented.

Middle East and Africa: Export Hub

The Middle East (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Egypt) has abundant low-cost solar and land. The electrolytic hydrogen market sees the region as a potential low-cost green hydrogen export hub. The NEOM project (Saudi Arabia) is the largest green hydrogen project. Africa (especially Morocco, Mauritania, Namibia) also has excellent solar and wind. The region lacks domestic demand; the hydrogen would be exported (as hydrogen, ammonia, or derivatives). The political stability and infrastructure are challenges. The market is nascent but has huge potential.

Latin America: Emerging Potential

Latin America (Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia) has exceptional renewable resources: solar in the Atacama Desert (Chile), wind in Patagonia (Argentina), hydropower in Brazil. The green hydrogen market in Latin America is emerging. Chile has a national hydrogen strategy and is targeting exports. The region has the potential to be a low-cost producer. Domestic demand is limited. Foreign investment is needed. The region could compete with the Middle East.

The Role of Hydrogen Shipping (as Ammonia or LOHC)

Hydrogen is difficult to transport. The green hydrogen market uses carriers: (1) Ammonia (NH3) – liquid at -33°C, established shipping industry, but ammonia is toxic, (2) Liquid hydrogen (LH2) – cryogenic (-253°C), energy-intensive to liquefy, boil-off, (3) Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) – liquid at ambient temperature, high cost. Most export projects use ammonia. The importing country will crack the ammonia back to hydrogen (using energy). The round-trip efficiency is low.

The Race for Low-Cost Electrolyzers

China is scaling electrolyzer manufacturing rapidly. The electrolytic hydrogen market sees Chinese manufacturers offering lower prices than Western competitors. However, quality and durability may be lower. Western countries may impose tariffs to protect domestic manufacturing. The green hydrogen market is likely to have regional supply chains (Chinese for Asia, Western for Europe/US). The cost of electrolyzers is a key factor in green hydrogen's competitiveness.

Policy and Regulation (Additionality and Carbon Pricing)

The green hydrogen market is highly policy-dependent. The EU has strict additionality rules (the renewable electricity must be new). The US IRA has less strict rules, which could lead to lower-cost hydrogen but also higher emissions (if existing renewable capacity is used). Carbon pricing (EU ETS) makes green hydrogen more competitive. The global carbon price is not harmonized. Europe has the highest carbon price. Without carbon pricing, green hydrogen needs subsidies.

Infrastructure: Pipelines and Ports

European countries are planning hydrogen pipelines (e.g., the European Hydrogen Backbone). The electrolytic hydrogen market will use converted natural gas pipelines (requires modification). New hydrogen pipelines are also being built. Ports are being equipped for ammonia and hydrogen imports. The infrastructure investment is large, but it will be shared with natural gas (in the transition). The first hydrogen pipelines are under construction.

The Future: A Global Hydrogen Market

By 2035, the green hydrogen market may be a globally traded commodity. Sun-rich countries (Australia, Chile, Middle East) will export to energy-poor countries (Japan, Korea, Europe). Pipelines will connect Europe (North Africa to Europe). The price of green hydrogen will vary by region. The trade will be in hydrogen carriers (ammonia, LOHC) initially, shifting to pipelines for regional trade. The green hydrogen market is a regional competition. And the electrolytic hydrogen market continues to scale, with each region leveraging its unique resources and policies to become a leader in the emerging hydrogen economy.
