The oil in a cartridge started as a plant somewhere in the same state. What happened in between explains most of what differs between two products at the same price.

One: harvest and handling

The first decision is what happens immediately after cutting. Material destined for live resin is frozen straight away, preserving the volatile terpene fraction. Material destined for distillate is dried and cured conventionally.

That single choice, made before extraction begins, sets the ceiling on flavour. A made live resin or nugrun live resin product was committed to at harvest, not at the extraction stage.

Two: extraction

Hydrocarbon extraction dissolves resin in butane or propane in a closed-loop system, then recovers the solvent. Ethanol extraction works similarly with a different solvent. Solventless pressing uses only heat and pressure.

Each pulls a different fraction of the plant and each leaves a different residue profile behind — which is why residual solvent testing exists and why solventless products skip that concern entirely.

Three: purging and refinement

Solvent-extracted material goes through vacuum purging to remove residual solvent. Distillate then goes further, through short-path distillation that strips nearly everything except the cannabinoid.

This is where potency is created and flavour is lost. A mr x vape or high wired vape listing built on distillate has been through this stage; a live resin product has not.

Four: formulation

Distillate needs flavour reintroduced, either with cannabis-derived terpenes recovered earlier or with botanical ones. Liquid diamonds are assembled here too — THCa crystalline redissolved into terpene sauce.

Formulation is where a house style is created, and where blending across batches happens. It is the stage most responsible for a brand tasting consistent.

Five: filling

Oil is warmed to flow, filled into cartridges, capped and sealed. Fill accuracy varies by equipment, which is why cartridges from the same run can differ slightly in level.

Hardware choice happens here — the coil, the ceramic, the intake hole size. A cali-blaze vape or franklin fields vape product's performance is decided as much at this stage as at extraction.

Six: testing and release

A sample from each batch goes to a state-licensed laboratory for potency and contaminant screening. Only on a pass does the batch get packaged, labelled with its results and released to retail.
