Charges Explained: AMC, Brokerage and Other Fees
When I first looked into building a portfolio of bonds in India, I quickly realized that understanding how a demat account works is the most important first step. Think of it as a digital locker where your investments—like corporate bonds and government securities—are safely stored online, removing the need for messy paper certificates.
However, before diving in, it is smart to look at the fees. If you aren't careful, extra costs can quietly chip away at your returns over time. Let us walk through the main charges—setup costs, yearly fees, and trading expenses—in simple terms.
1. Account Opening Fees
When setting up an account, traditional banks or older brokers sometimes charge an upfront fee just to process your paperwork. Thankfully, the process has become much easier. Many modern online platforms now let you open a demat account for free. By doing your KYC check online using your PAN and Aadhaar cards, you can completely skip those setup fees.
2. Yearly Maintenance Charges (AMC)
Even if your account sits completely empty or you do not make any trades for months, many institutions still charge a yearly fee just to keep the account active. This is known as the Annual Maintenance Charge (AMC). If you are holding long-term investments like bonds, these yearly costs can add up. To avoid this, look for platforms that offer zero AMC accounts.
3. Buying and Selling Fees
Aside from setup and yearly costs, you also want to check what happens when you trade. On many modern apps, buying bonds online comes with zero brokerage. However, when you decide to sell your investments later on, your broker will usually charge a small, fixed transaction fee per order.
By taking a few minutes to check these charges ahead of time and choosing a low-cost platform, you can keep more of your hard-earned money working for your future instead of paying it out in unnecessary fees.
