They act as the primary market makers on most major exchanges, providing the bulk of the market's liquidity and profiting from capturing the bid-ask spread millions of times a day. Their market share is a direct function of their technological prowess; in the HFT world, the fastest player typically captures the largest share of the most profitable trades. These firms represent the extreme endpoint of the technological arms race that defines the modern algorithm trading industry.
