Adhesive Innovation and Seismic Safety Performance

Given Japan's vulnerability to seismic activity, structural plywood panels must meet demanding mechanical performance criteria under the Building Standard Law. In residential construction, plywood sheets are widely used as shear walls and subflooring diaphragms to absorb and distribute earthquake forces.

To ensure long-term durability under cyclic stress, chemical manufacturers have developed high-performance adhesives, including advanced Phenol-Formaldehyde (PF) and Polyurethane (PU) systems. These heavy-duty panels are designed to serve as direct load-bearing platforms, allowing builders to completely eliminate traditional secondary floor joists in post-and-beam construction. By spanning large distances between main structural columns, ultra-thick plywood cuts down on site labor requirements and accelerates building timelines, helping contractors manage chronic labor shortages across the Japanese construction sector.
